Try Out Our Approach with a Free Maths Masterclass
At Learning Through Doing, we know we’re breaking the mould when it comes to maths lessons. Instead of just writing in exercise books and learning through repetition, we know from our own experience that children learn best with hands-on maths instruction. We understand it may seem like a shift, but we think that once you see the improvements in your classroom, you won’t go back. That’s why we’re happy to offer a free taster of our incredible masterclasses so you can see how they could shake up your teaching routine in the best way.
The Benefits of Our System
Understanding the Challenge in Primary Classrooms
We’ve spent enough time in classrooms ourselves to know that the pressure on teachers can feel overwhelming. You spend ages finding content to create detailed lesson plans, only to get in the classroom and find no one raising their hands. Especially in primary school, children often don’t want to do the core lessons—they just want the fun bits like art or sports. We don’t need to tell you the importance of a good maths education in these early years, so we’re sure you’ve spent time worrying about the lack of engagement in your maths lessons. Rather than trying the same approach over and over or devoting even more time to finding new content for your lesson plans, we think it’s time to switch it up.
Why Traditional Maths Teaching Falls Short
The trouble with maths as a subject for younger children is that they struggle to grasp abstract ideas, as that part of their brain doesn’t develop until around 12. That’s why when you mention numbers and symbols, they can switch off quickly because they find it hard to picture them. That’s where our lessons come in. We take maths from an abstract concept to something your students can engage with and get their hands on.
Bringing Maths to Life Through Hands-On Learning
Each of our mathematics masterclasses will give you practical tips to bring the ideas to life. By utilising physical tools like counters, number mats, and multilink cubes, you make big maths topics feel more like play. This gets your students looking forward to maths, and you’ll soon see hands shooting up when you ask a question. You’ll also have more opportunities to get your students to demonstrate their knowledge. This way, you ensure the ideas have been grasped before you move on to the next stage, so you don’t have the frustration of having to circle back too often. Building good foundations leads to better outcomes, so hands-on is the best choice for your students.
Supporting Teachers Through Every Step
With our masterclasses, we view you as a student too. We hope that one day getting hands-on with maths will be commonplace, and we’re working on it. For now, though, we recognise that changing the way you approach a key subject can feel alien to you as an educator. That’s why we include tips on how to adjust your style on our easy-to-use platform. This way of broadening your knowledge allows you to step into the classroom confidently and ensures you’re ready for whatever your students might throw at you with this new approach. Each of our hundreds of lessons includes a video alongside detailed lesson plans and breakdowns. This means you save valuable time when it comes to lesson planning and offers different options to absorb the information.
Ongoing Guidance and Professional Development
We understand how seriously you take your teaching role, and we’ll be with you every step of the way to support you in your implementation of this new program. When you invest in our full program, you’ll have experts available to answer questions and guide you as you adjust to the new ideas. We can even deliver professional development at your school if needed to upskill multiple teachers at once. Get in touch for details if you think that would help.
